The Levi region offers a variety of canoeing routes for beginners and more advanced paddlers. The rivers in the region (Ounasjoki, Kapsajoki, Loukinen and Aakenusjoki) are easy waterways for excursions with rapids of grade I. Aakenusjoki, however, becomes very shallow towards the end of the summer, so it is advisable to do your paddling trip there during early summer. Kapsajoki is renowned for its fish and renting a canoe is a great way to reach new fishing waters!
Activity providers organise guided excursions and rent out equipment for independent canoeing, with transport if needed. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the water conditions in the region, especially if planning to canoe later in summer or in early autumn, when the water level of the rivers in Lapland is at its lowest. You can check this on the website of Finland's Environmental Administration. The current water levels are updated on the website always at the start of the month. For further information please visit the Levi Tourist Information Centre.
Good maps for the rivers Ounasjoki and Aakenusjoki are e.g. Ylläs-Levi outdoor map and the GT14 map on which also Loukinen and Kapsajoki are marked. Maps can be obtained at the Levi Tourist Information Centre.
