Exhibition by Raisa Raekallio and Misha del Val at the Särestöniemi Museum's Café
'Space Refugees' is an exhibition by a local artists Raisa Raekallio (1978, Kittilä) and Misha del Val (1979, Bilbao), which consists of oil paintings the couple has painted together.
'Space Refugees' represents a fictional situation where aliens from space have had to leave their homes and are now seeking refuge on Earth. In paintings painted with a ghostly undertone, refugees from space - fantastic, mysterious characters - roam the dark snowy landscape of cosmic time and cosmic darkness, seeking refuge from our planet. In their works combining realism and fantasy, artists have used photographs of refugees as an inspiration. Despite the heavy theme, the artists have tried to address the subject without forgetting warm humor and playfulness.
The centerpiece of the paintings is a silver and gold glittering space blanket that provides protection to vulnerable creatures from the cold and alien outside world. The artists are fascinated by the myriad of possibilities the space blanket provides in painting including pleats, lights, shadows and hues.
Perhaps the artists, in a way, identify with the homeless refugees of space and, in turn, seek security, protection and peace of mind from their own space blanket, making art.
