It has been predicted that there's going to be Northern Lights in Levi soon. So take a look skywards! Prediction provided by Sunsää.
Lapland’s attractions include an exotic experience that tops them all – the Northern Lights. There was a time when no one knew when they would appear, but those days are over.
There can be no doubt that the Northern Lights are one of the key reasons for visiting Lapland. People come to Levi from all over the world hoping to catch a glimpse of them. But how do you know when the Northern Lights will regale the skies? What if the right moment goes by unnoticed?
Sunsää Oy, which specialises in weather-reactive marketing services, has the answer. They created a Northern Lights alert service.
– We receive information on the solar wind from the ACE satellite. When the solar wind is sufficiently active, the Northern Lights appear, explains Ville Strandman of Sunsää.
No false alarms
To avoid false alarms, Sunsää ensures that conditions are favourable for watching the Northern Lights before sending out a Northern Lights alert.
– In practice this means checking that the sky is cloudless so that the Northern Lights are sure to be visible, Strandman adds.
Online and as a mobile app
This service is provided in collaboration with Levi Tourist Office. It has found a natural home on the Levi.fi website, which alerts readers on when the Northern Lights will appear above Levi. You can also buy the Levi Northern Lights app, if you would like to receive Northern Lights alerts by mobile phone – wherever you are in Finland.
Maria Virolainen, Managing Director of Levi Tourist Office, is delighted with the new service, which enables Levi to serve visitors even better than before.
– Seeing the Northern Lights is an amazing experience, regardless of which country you are from. Together with Sunsää, Levi is proud to be the first in Finland to introduce such a service, and we feel sure that it will be warmly welcomed by visitors to Levi from near and far, says Virolainen.
Warning gives you time to prepare
Both the web service and the mobile app have been designed to serve users as well as possible. Northern Lights alerts are given well in advance, 1–2 hours before the lights appear.
That leaves enough time to prepare a romantic moment for two, to take your family to the best observation spot, or just to reserve the best places in the Lappish wilderness.
Your evening will be crowned by the dance of colours above you.
For Northern Lights alerts, see the frontpage of the Levi website. You can buy the Levi Northern Lights mobile app for € 4.90 from App Store and Google Play Store.

When Tanja Poutiainen announced an end to her successful racing career in spring 2014, it was clear that this Finnish alpine skiing heroine would be no couch potato. I was keen to hear more about her plans for the future and thoughts on the past. We ended up talking about football.
