Levi activities – Paddle into tranquility
Three pecfect spots for kayaking and canoeing in Levi.
PEACE AND WIDE OPEN SPACES - OUNASJOKI RIVER
THE PADDLE BREAKS the still surface of the water as the kayak glides ahead. The river makes a tight loop and then reveals a smal lparadise for the paddler. A sandy beach is a perfect spot to have a snack break and even make a small fire (make sure a forest fire warning has not been issued in the area).
River: Ounasjoki river bed is wide and the current is moderate. No surprising rapids or places where currents get stronger. Still, there is lots to see and experience.
For: Beginner level.
River scale: 1–2, 3 during flood season in spring.
Equipment: Basic equipment. No need for helmet.
At its best: From Spring to Autumn
RAPIDS, FISH AND MOOSE VISITORS - KAPSAJOKI RIVER
THE WOODY BANKS of Kapsajoki river are home to many Nordic aquatic birds. During the white summer nights, the paddler can come across moose who have gathered to drink. If gliding quietly gets boring, small rapids keep you alert. Try your luck fishing also. There is grayling, salmon, trout and perch.
River: Kapsajoki is a small sand bottom river with clear water. It has small but strong currents here and there so the kayak might scrape against some rocks.
For: For someone with experience or together with an experienced guide.
Equipment: Helmet.
River scale: 1–1+.
At its best: During high water season in Spring and Autumn.
FELLS AND PROPER RAPIDS - AAKENUS RIVER
THE RIVER AAKENUS flows by its namesake fell nestled in rugged beauty. The current gets suddenly faster, the water is swirling and the sounds of splashing fill the air. This route offers the experienced paddler exactly what they came for: challenges and adrenaline rush matched only by the currents.
River: Aakenus has numerous rapids which can get very tricky during flood season in spring. During low water season be prepared to occasionally carry your kayak.
For: Experienced white water rafter
River scale: 1&2.
Equipment: Helmet mandatory.
At its best: Spring and Autum
